Criteria For Doctrinal Understanding

Allegorically, doctrine can be likened to building blocks. When you have a certain amount of correct doctrine, then you possess a certain amount of biblical understanding.

The diagram to the left; notice the red block on the right side, third row from the bottom. The red block is incorrect doctrine, but it's foundation is on correct doctrine. When you begin to adopt faulty doctrine, any additional doctrine or scriptures that potentially could be understood, cannot be understood. You cannot build correct doctrine upon faulty doctrine. Faulty doctrines do not provide a solid foundation and you arrive at an understanding and growth standstill.

Scripture testifies to this building block allegory. Read Isaiah 28:9-10. Knowledge and doctrine are built precept upon precept, line upon line, and here a little and there a little.

Anyone studying the bible must stack the lines and precepts correctly or else wrong doctrines will form.

There are four essential requirements to grow in doctrinal understanding.

  1. You must be familiar with the whole bible.
  2. You must have correct doctrinal foundations and correct premises for what you already know.
  3. You must be honest and truthful. Read scripture for what is says. We all must take off any preconditioned ideology glasses.
  4. Be lead by the Holy Spirit (Mark 4:11, John 16:13)

These four requirements are essential to understanding and interpreting scriptures in order to form correct doctrines.
