ISRAEL - MY PEOPLE - ARE CALLED BY MY NAME

(Written December 18, 2010)

The Israelites are called by HIS Name. The following scriptures are examples demonstrating this fact:

2Ch 7:14 If My people, which are called by My Name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Isa 43:6-7 I shall say to the north, 'Give them up!' And to the south, 'Do not keep them back!' Bring My sons from afar, and My daughters from the ends of the earth - all those who are called by My Name, whom I have created, formed, even made for My esteem.

Dan 9:19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for Your own sake, O my God: for Your city and Your people are called by Your Name.

The meaning of "called by His Name" does not mean... in the sense of summonsing the Israelites to Himself. Based upon Daniel 9:19, both the name "Israel" and the name "Jerusalem" are additional names for our Savior. The name "Israel" means: He who prevails with God. The name "Jerusalem" means: "teaching (or teacher) of peace". (Additional name ref: Is 9:6) Both names are befitting of our Savior. The One who became Christ/Messiah is the teacher of peace and He prevails.

The city "Jerusalem" was neither built nor named by Hebrews. Jerusalem is a remnant Canaanite town called "Salem" and dates back to the early bronze age. And, the first Biblical mentioning of this place is in Genesis 14:18, where Abraham and Melchizedek meet. (Melchizedek was the King of Salem, King of Peace. Ref: Heb 7:1-2) The name Jerusalem occurs first in Joshua 10:1. It was a Jebusite city until David overtook it (2 Samuel 5:6). By the time the Hebrews had a say in it, the name Jerusalem had been long established. Most likely, the original name, that sounded something like Urusalimum, meant 'Foundation Of Shalem' (Peace).

In addition to the name "Jerusalem", the name "Israel" is another name for our Savior. As like 2Ch 7:14, Isa 43:6-7, and Daniel 9:19 has shown, the Israelites are called by HIS Name. Isaiah 49 demonstrates that the One called "Israel" saves the nation of "Israel". The first half of Isaiah chapter 49 is all about our Savior. I will walk through verses one through twelve and expound upon the meaning.

Firstly, for a preview summary of Isaiah 49: The "Servant" speaks. He tells us that He was called from the womb by name, His mouth is like a sharp sword, His name is Israel, He feels like He has labored in vain (referring to the OT events), He was formed from the womb in order to bring the nation of Israel back to Elohim, He is a light to the gentiles, He will bring delierance to the ends of the earth, He is given as a covenant (contract) to the people, He will restore the earth, and loosen the prisoners. Does this sound like the prophet Isaiah is speaking about himself? It doesn't to me. And, it certainly can't be the nation of Israel who - they themselves - need someone else to save them.

(My commentary is in a dark reddish purple text under each verse.)

Isaiah 49

1 Listen to me, all you in distant lands! Pay attention, you who are far away! The Lord called me before my birth; from within the womb he called me by name.

The Father in Heaven called the One who became Yahushua Messiah, before birth. From Mary's womb, The Father called His Son, the Christ, by name. And, notice who the audience is that is being addressed here in verse one. People that live in distant lands. YHWH wants people in distant lands to know this said information. This is the first aspect of the gospel message to the world.

2 He made my words of judgment as sharp as a sword. He has hidden me in the shadow of his hand. I am like a sharp arrow in his quiver.

The Messiah will judge the earth with a sharp sword from His mouth. (Ref: Rev 1:16, 19:15) Right now, Christ is hidden from view. But one day, He will appear mightily!

3 He said to Me, "You are my servant, Israel, and you will bring me glory."

The "ME" spoken of here is the same "ME" in verses one and two that possesses words of judgment as like a sharp sword, the same "ME" that the Father in Heaven called by name in the womb. The Messiah is the servant and His Name is Israel - the One who prevails with El. (Additional ref: Isaiah 53 - the suffering servant chapter.) Israel the Messiah will bring the Father in Heaven glory. Compare this verse (v:3) with verse 5. This servant named Israel will bring the nation of Israel back to YHWH.

4 I replied, "But my work seems so useless! I have spent my strength for nothing and to no purpose. Yet I leave it all in the Lord’s hand; I will trust God for my reward."

The One who became Christ, worked very hard in the old testament. But, those ancient Israelites were like unworkable dross. He gave them-up (until a future time). The Israelites WERE the first-fruits of YHWH, but all who ate of it became guilty and evil came upon them. (Ref: Jer 2:3,9)

In regards to the statement, "I will trust God for my reward.": Firstly, the Mighty El that brought the nations of Israelites out of Egypt into the promised land said this in Jeremiah 2:7 ..."Then I brought you into a garden land, to eat its fruit and its goodness. But when you entered, you defiled MY land and made MY inheritance an abomination." This Mighty El who speaks in Jeremiah says that the promised land is HIS inheritance. (Also Ref: Is 65:9, Heb 1:2) Consequently, it is THIS Mighty El who became Yahushua Messiah. He was born into the tribe of Judah; as a result, He is legally an Israelite. Because He is the first-born Israelite of the Father in heaven, anyone who becomes a part of His body is automatically an Israelite too. For anyone to say that they are a gentile believer is erroneous and not applicable. If you are a part of Messiah, then you are an Israelite - a prevailer with Elohim.

Additionally; scripture says that when Yahushua Messiah returns to this earth, His REWARD will be with Him. (Ref: 62:11). This aspect is a huge subject; although (I will say), His reward are the saints.

5 And now the Lord said —the one who formed Me in My mother's womb to be His servant, who commissioned Me to bring Israel back to Him. The Lord has honored Me, and My God has given Me strength.

Again, this is the same servant as the one in verse one. This Servant, who is also called Israel, is commissioned to bring the nation of Israel back to YHWH. The Father in Heaven HONORS this Servant and has given Him strength.

6 He says, "You will do more than restore the people of Israel to me. I will make you a light to the Gentiles, and you will bring my salvation to the ends of the earth."

This Servant is also commissioned to be a light to the gentiles and bring about salvation to EVERYONE. This verse ties right back into verse one where this Servant wants distant nations (gentile nations) to hear the news of His birth.

7 The Lord, the Redeemer and Holy One of Israel, says to the one who is despised and rejected by the nations, to the one who is the servant of rulers: "Kings will stand at attention when you pass by. Princes will also bow low because of the Lord, the faithful one, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you."

Both the Father in Heaven and His Son, the Servant speak in this verse. They speak to the saints. The saints suffer now, but will be given honor in the future due to the faithful Yahushua Messiah.

8 This is what the Lord says: "At just the right time, I will respond to you. On the day of salvation I will help you. I will protect you and give you to the people as my covenant with them. Through you I will reestablish the land of Israel and assign it to its own people again.

This verse is a mouthful. Firstly, there is duality here. It speaks of both Christ (Yahushua Messiah) and the saints. But, two fulfillment's. The first event was during the first century. The Father in Heaven helped His Son and gave Him for a covenant to the people. (ie. - the bread and wine.) The first century was essentially, Christ's salvation. He died, then arose from the grave. The second fulfillment is yet to occur for the saints.

9 I will say to the prisoners, 'Come out in freedom,' and to those in darkness, 'Come into the light.' They will be my sheep, grazing in green pastures and on hills that were previously bare.

Christ (Yahushua Messiah), makes these statements. The people are His sheep because He said so, and He also said in the NT that He is the shepherd. (Ref: Ps 95:7-8, John 10:1-14)

10 They will neither hunger nor thirst. The searing sun will not reach them anymore. For the Lord in his mercy will lead them; he will lead them beside cool waters.

This is yet futuristic.

11 And I will make my mountains into level paths for them. The highways will be raised above the valleys.

This is yet futuristic.

12 See, my people will return from far away, from lands to the north and west, and these from the land of Sinim.

This is yet futuristic. The nation of Israel will once again return to the promised land.

Christ, our Messiah has many names. He has many names because He performs many functions and -in actuality- exists as many things. His names go beyond the limited list found in Isaiah 9:6. For one simple example: we know that He is 'The Word'. (Ref: John 1) But, this said name/title isn't found in Isaiah 9:6's list. Although: for us, He is EVERYTHING. He is in the Father, and the Father is in Him. (Ref: John 17) Christ is our LIFE source.

Among Christ's many names and titles are: "Israel" and "Jerusalem." He PREVAILS with His Father in Heaven - bringing about salvation and PEACE.
