Do you truly know how to love?

What is love? Paul tells us a bit about love in 1 Corinthians 13. According to verse three, you can give all of your possessions to feed the poor and give yourself to be burned, but that is not necessarily love. According to verses four through eight, Paul writes love is:

  • patient
  • kind
  • behaves decently
  • seeks others well being
  • reckons good
  • rejoices in truth
  • covers all
  • believes all
  • expects all
  • endures all
  • never fails

In Galatians 5:22-23, Paul's writes the fruit of YHWH's spirit is:

  • love
  • joy
  • peace
  • patience
  • kindness
  • goodness
  • trustworthiness
  • gentleness
  • self control

According to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, the Greek word used for love in Galatians 5:22 is "ag-ah'-pay" (#26) meaning: Affection, dear, or benevolence, specifically a love feast.

In Deuteronomy 10:12, YHWH required Israel (today the Spirit lead Israelites) to fear Him, to walk in all His ways, and to LOVE Him with all of their heart and soul. According to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance, the Hebrew word used for love is "khaw-shak" (#157) meaning: a prim root to cling, ie. join, (fig.) to love, delight in, (have a ) desire, long, set (in) love. Khaw-shak" (#157) is the same type of love we should have for our neighbor (Lev 19:18).

When you tell a friend, "I love you", will it fail one day when you become angry at them? If yes, your love for them is conditional and it really isn't the type of love YHWH expects of you. Are your thoughts for others focused on their well being and goodly traits, or do you dwell on their foibles (weakness in character) or sins? Do you love others enough to quit committing sinful acts? (Sinful acts not only effect yourself, but sin always effects others and augments to future family generations.)

Do we long for our friends, family and even enemies? Is our heart stirred when we think of them? The answer to these questions should be yes. You can do a self-examination by asking yourself similar questions from the above two lists describing love. The descriptive words either effect our self-conduct, our thoughts, our interaction with our neighbor, and /or YHWH. How do you rate?
